At Swell Van Co. we think vans are swell, so we’re helping folks get on the road. That’s why we make camper van conversion products for DIY-ready outdoor enthusiasts. We offer do-it-yourself kits for those who want to actually have fun with their build and are a full installer of our equipment in beautiful Bend, Oregon. Of course, we offer semi-custom conversions as well. From an empty cargo van to an outfitted adventure-capable camper, we want others to find their stoke for vanlife, enjoy the process, and pursue their happiness in a van that’s right for them.

Our focus on providing easy to assemble kits means SVC is poised to reach a wide audience and leave a large impact in this space. We are consistently expanding into adjacent product lines that will broaden the ways we can help this vibrant community.

CNC OPERATOR / PRODUCTION TECH

Low to Mid Level Experience

 

About the Role

We are currently looking for a full-time manufacturing specialist to join our team. This position is responsible for the manufacturing, assembly, finishing, quality assurance, and function testing of our products before they are installed locally or shipped to customers. Applicant must have experience working with hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and the ability to train on and implement new equipment. Broad mechanical knowledge, an acute attention to detail, and a positive attitude are required.

 

Expectations:

  • Work Monday through Thursday 9am to 6:00pm with lunch
  • Detail-oriented: must be able to make aesthetic design decisions, analyze faults, think through a complete install process, and avoid likely problems prior to execution
  • Self-starter: take initiative in progressive steps on each project, be self-directed,
  • Inquisitive: curious individuals who desire to understand the process from start to finish function the best in our shop
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and tidy work space
  • Must be able to follow directions, work as a team, and work as an individual
  • Take pride in work completed and always seek to improve quality and efficiency

 

General Qualifications:

  • Current driver's license and clean driving record
  • Knowledge of general construction practices e.g. cabinetry, wood working, metal working, and assembly
  • Experience safely operating hand tools and power tools (drill press, grinders, table saw, circular saw, cutoff wheel, chop saw, pneumatic nail gun, sanders, jig saw, spray adhesive, and other general shop tools)
  • Ability to read and understand production documentation: drawings, installation instructions, etc.
  • An advanced understanding of computers: Mac and Windows operating systems, cloud-based storage solutions (Google Drive), word/document processing, printing, etc.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and load full size sheet material (80 lb) onto CNC bed
  • Occasional travel may be required

 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the successful operation of our CNC machines
  • Perform start-up and regular maintenance checks on equipment
  • Load materials on and off machine, detailed material handling
  • Post process and sand rough cut products from our CNC machines
  • Keep track of material inventory and remnants for future use
  • Pack together products into packages that can be shipped across country
  • Gather necessary parts and combine into shipped products
  • Operate pallet jack lift or forklift
  • Paint metal parts and finish wood products with paint and/or varnish
  • Assemble products for installation
  • Ensure product quality assurance checks
  • Meet schedule deadlines
  • Maintain a safe and clean work space
  • Fabricate components from raw materials
  • Laminate plywood sheets for production
  • Upholster and install wall and door panels
  • Perform detailed cleaning of products for final presentation
  • Additional shop duties as directed

 

Skills and Knowledge Desired:

  • Basic knowledge in CAD and CAM (will be trained)
  • Experience with the following software considered a plus: Microvellum, Fusion 360, WinCNC, Mach4
  • Knowledge and experience in mechanical and wood working
  • Experience in power tool operation
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Well organized with the ability to prioritize.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving
  • Effective decision-making abilities
  • A champion of change (change agent)
  • Basic knowledge in plumbing and electrical systems is considered a plus

Wage: 16-22/hr, depending upon experience level

ASSEMBLY TECHNICIAN

  • Paint metal parts and finish wood products with paint and/or varnish
  • Assemble and install conversion components
  • Cut and install insulation
  • Meet schedule deadlines
  • Test systems in vehicle and verify proper operation
  • Maintain a safe and clean work space
  • Fabricate components from raw materials
  • Post process and sand rough cut products from our CNC machines
  • Laminate plywood sheets for production
  • Upholster and install wall and door panels
  • Operate pallet jack lift or forklift
  • Perform detailed cleaning of exterior of vehicles including washing, windows, tires, wheels, etc.
  • Perform detailed cleaning of interior of vehicles including what we install and all other interior compartments
  • Additional shop duties as directed

 

Mechanical Duties:

  • Install, diagnose, and repair mechanical components including appliances, roof vents, and hatches
  • Remove and install bumpers, roof racks, light bars, bicycle carriers, external storage options, ladders, awnings, etc.
  • Cut through body panels to install windows, fans, and solar systems
  • Plumb simple water systems with PEX components and tools

 

Electrical Duties:

  • Construct and install 12V DC and 110V AC wiring harnesses
  • Install, diagnose and repair wiring, including 110V AC inverters
  • Install, diagnose and repair 12V DC components and wiring including off road lights, interior lights, relays, fans, batteries, charge controllers and all other DC components
  • Install solar arrays and charging systems

 

Skills and Knowledge Desired:

  • Knowledge and experience in mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
  • Experience in power tool operation
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Well organized with the ability to prioritize.
